You posit that the choice is between fighting harder or listening better. This ignores the third option which is to engage in more dialogue with the other. Since this requires listerning I would drop listening and replace with dialoguing. In this process individals have to listen and speak in a rule dominated fashion and what each says is as important as what they hear. Good point! I am indeed a Habermas fan.
