NYT editor Joe Kahn says: “If we become a partisan organization exclusively focused on threats to democracy, and we give up our coverage of the issues, the social, political, and cultural divides that are animating participation in politics in America, we will lose the battle to be independent.”

Reminds me when WaPo editor Marty Baron said: “The way I view it is, we’re not at war with the administration, we’re at work. We’re doing our jobs.”

but focusing on threats to democracy isn't partisan; and when an administration declares war on the media, just doing your job isn't doing enough.

I think his point is that there is more to cover than threats to democracy -- he said "and give up our coverage of the issues..." There are real problems that are making people so unhappy that they no longer have confidence in democracy.

more issues to cover, yes. but none greater for a major news org in the U.S. these days
